Duffee: Impeachment press conferences at Constitution Parks

By Richard Duffee - Posted on 03 June 2008

Hi!

Last night my friend David Bedell, the Fairfield County (Ct) Green organizer, pointed out to me that Constitution Park, in Norwalk, Ct., is a good place to hold a press conference about impeachment. Then he mentioned that there was another Constitution Park in Shelton, Ct.--ALSO in the 4th congressional district of Ct. So I realized that there have to be an awful lot of Constitution Parks.

So I wrote up this press release.

Why not have these press conferences all over the place? All you have to do is go through the voting record of your congressional rep and pick out a few of the flagrantly unconstitutional votes and disgusting war-mongering votes and votes that are clearly servile to vicious imperialists and creepy militarists. Then you send out your release and go defend it before whoever shows up.

DUFFEE SAYS SHAYS OBLIGATED TO IMPEACH

Richard Duffee holds that Rep. Shays has not kept the portion of his oath of office pledging him to defend the Constitution against its domestic enemies.
Duffee, the Green Party nominee for Congress in the 4th District, says, "Rep. Shays' voting record since 2000 suggests that 9/11 panicked him into believing that whatever measures Mr. Bush wanted were necessary."

Duffee argues that Rep. Shays does not seem to have realized how wrong Bush and he were, how vulnerable Shays is to deception, and how much he has rationalized in the interests of the imperialism and militarism that are destroying our hold on our Constitution.

"So far," says Duffee, "Rep. Shays has only admitted that he was wrong that there were weapons of mass destruction, and has blamed our criminal policies in Iraq on Cheney and Rumsfeld, saying that had Powell's advice been followed, all would have been well. But the Center for Public Integrity found that Powell made 244 false statements about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq."

"Rep. Shays argues that our primary error was disbanding the Iraqi army, police force, and border guards without admitting that this implies we should not have invaded," says Duffee. "Rep. Shays maintains, in violation of the UN Charter, that US policy makers should always be capable of preemptive strikes, and should be believed to be capable of them. His position is inconsistent with Article 6 of our
Constitution."

Duffee, a former law professor, adds that Rep. Shays appears not to be disturbed by the unconstitutional suspension of habeas corpus or by violations of the 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 14th amendments. Duffee concludes, "Rep. Shays has not upheld his oath of office. He is obligated to demand impeachment and to vote against the unconstitutional acts he is supporting."

At 5:15 pm, Tuesday, June 3, Duffee will answer questions about his position at Constitution Park in East Norwalk, across the street from Veteran's Park. Two hours later, at 7:15 p.m., Duffee will read from his poem, "The Slow News of Need," at Borders Bookshop on Rte. 7 in Wilton.
