Subject: [NewBroomCoalition] Am I the only one still running for Congress?

Jack Shannon has thrown in the towel, no one has responded to a couple of my posts about the upcoming election. Working on impeachment is all very well, but where would we be if the incumbents weren't feeling some heat from challengers like Cindy and myself?

This is supposed to be a coalition of candidates for Congress. Is anyone else conducting a serious campaign?

Carol and everyone -

I was unable to get the required number of signatures to get on the ballot, alas. So my campaign is no longer. Next time...I remain interested in the list, which I hope will continue to grow and prosper. It is an excellent work in progress.

Well as a matter of fact, I've been running since October. Yes it is quite serious. I am now in an intense phase of effort fighting out ballot access restrictions in court. No you are not the only one. Hardly.

I remain a candidate in MS-01 and anticipate being in forums/debates in the fall. I'll bring up impeachment every chance I get, although our issues focus is broader, and highlights the Iraq occupation, energy, healthcare, and campaign finance.

Our district also hosts a Presidential Debate this fall. We plan to either protest the exclusion of alternative candidates or, more likely, organize a separate debate to include McKinney, Nader, and Barr (possibly others, if there are any on the ballot in a significant number of states by Sept.). We've already made inquiries to McKinney and Nader, in preparation. My thought is to invite Obama also, given that he once said he would debate Nader.

Frankly, after receiving only 398 votes out of about 75,000 cast in the April 22 Special Election, I'm giving more money to other candidates who seem to have a reasonable chance of winning than putting money into my own campaign. I've learned a great deal about running a Congressional campaign, have thrust important issues into people's attention in this conservative district, and look forward to mounting an even more serious campaign in 2010 (if no one else steps forward).

In Connecticut we believe we will have Green Party impeachment candidates in all five districts: Steve Fournier in the 1st, Scott Deshefy in the 2nd, Ralph Ferrucci in the 3rd, Richard Duffee (me) in the 4th, and Harold Burbank in the 5th. Ralph Ferrucci alone already has ballot access because the Green Party got over 1% of the vote there for Congress in 2006. For the other 4 districts we need validated signatures of 1% of the number of people who voted in the 2006 election for each office. That varies between 2000 and 2500. Rejection rates vary from town to town from about 10% to about 60% depending primarily on how mobile the population is. So far we have 1.5 times the required number or more for all but Steve Fournier in the 1st, and are working furiously to get the extra 1000 to 1200 we believe he will need to cover the rejections. The deadline is August 6. We're delivering the last set of petitions for me to 10 town offices this morning so that counting will not be delayed.

Wonderful, Richard. Why don't you invite the other candidates to join New Broom? Peace, Carol

I am also still in the running. I held an impeachment rally last Thursday, which had a decent turn-out in this Republican dominated large rural district. Currently, 4 of us will be competing in the general election.

I am on the ballot as a Democrat - independent thinking Democrat - and running against a 38 year Republican incumbent. We turned in over 5000 signatures last March to do this, in lieu of $9,991 fee.

I am in a primary on August 26th. There is a millionaire who was a Republican, then Reform and Now Dem running and a Republican mayor turned Dem running.
So there is money and entitlement running, and then there is me.

In 2006, we received 67000 votes with only 41,000 dollars.

The corporate Democrats here in Pinellas County Florida have "chosen" the docile mayor as their "favorite.
So we'll see what happens on August 26th.
If you can tell your friends that there is a woman in Florida who is directly running against the machine, that would be me. If anyone can spare 10 bucks, it will help us mail out our literature. https://secure.actblue.com/contribute/entity/18214

So, Yes, Carol, I'm running. Here's a video that describes the battle.

Carol,

Because I am very much in my race, I have not had time to get involved
with the plethora of discussions on this list.

I met Cynthia Papermaster in DC last Friday. I also enjoyed being there
with David Swanson, riding in the elevator with Dennis Kucinich,
greeting Chairman Conyers on his way into work, and gaining a seat in
the hearing room.

I am still running. I am away. When I left I had scores over the gross signatures of 2179 verified required for ballot access. My reject rates were running up to 50% in some towns due to alleged non-registration of signers, which seems impossible to me since I collected over 98% of the sigs myself and I asked most signers if they were a voter, were registered and similar questions. The reject rates are highest in Watertown, CT, which abuts Waterbury, CT, known for corruption. I have no evidence of corruption in Watertown, but it is is a nice town composed of a wide socio-economic base, which by and large welcomed my petitioning there. I think most of these voters know where they live and whether they are registered, so I am baffled at the reject rate there. Other towns in "affluent" areas are rejecting at a far lesser rate, between 5 and 25%, so I think my gross sigs will be OK, but, I will collect hundreds mor e next week before the 8-6-08 deadline to be sure.

Harold,
90% of rejections are because people are not registered to vote at their current address. Rejections occur in direct proportion to transience. The AVERAGE US family moves every 5 years. The relatively poor move MUCH more frequently because they are always in search of a marginally better apartment, a better job in a different location, or lower rent. Connecticut has the highest rents in the country because, other than Alaska, which has to spend enormous money on importation, it has the highest per capita income. Ct also has the 4th highest difference between the rich and the poor. Consequently the pressures to move are as high here as they are anywhere in the country.

The relatively poor register one year, move the next, don't vote the third, move again, and then aren't sure where they are registered or whether they still are. The system is designed for them to fail: the system wants homeowners and landlords and employers to get what they want, and wants to exclude people they consider unstable, unreliable, passing through, foreign, or "uncommitted" to staying there. If the state WANTED transient people to be able to vote, they'd allow registration the day of voting. They don't.

I believe David Bedell found 1692 certified signatures for you in Pearl Williams' office on July 22, but he had no way of knowing how many petitions had not yet reached her office. I delivered another 42.

Sorry to hear that, Mike and Leland. I hope you both stay on the list. I am still running and on the November ballot.
